Fine for a light transportable scanner

I bought a new scanner because it was becoming obvious Epson was never going to get around to updating the drivers for the Perfection 2580 I had for 64-bit Macs and the workarounds (SANE) were crappy. I’ve been pleased with the Canon. Observations:
* It’s very light and thin, which is nice, but it wouldn’t take much abuse.
* It takes power from the USB (no AC adapter).
* It scans reasonably fast, but the reset is slow – not a lot faster than the scan.
* The cover hinges along the long edge, which I prefer for books.
* The cover locks at a bit past 90°, and then if you press two tabs, it will open flat. This is nice, but it wouldn’t take much abuse to bust the mechanism.
* I mostly use it with Acrobat, but the stand-alone software is fine too.
* I’m happy with the quality of the scans. The colour balance and consistency is much better than the old Epson.
I haven’t had a chance to try the film scanning attachment.
GARBAGE

I am a faithful Canon user. I love their digital cameras. I have used all kinds of digital scanners, digital video etc. I have set up my own scanning situation with a point and shoot canon and a close up lens that does WAY better scans. This scanner may work well for paper images or even sheet film but for scanning from 35mm film, slides or film strips, it is worse than useless because it makes you think it will work. The res in dpi or ppi does not match advertised specs. Specs say 9600. Interface window says 4800. When you get into the actual scanning window for film, the max. scan definition is 1200, and the scans don’t seem to have even that res and are terrible in terms of lightness, sharpness and overall usability. The one I bought is back in the box on the way to return. David Heintz, Media Instructor
Nice Scanner

The scanner does a good job but is a bit difficult to operate. The buttons on the scanner don’t work as you think they should. I have figured it out but it took longer than it should have.
Great Scanner – Windows 7 Compatible

Great scanner – easy to use. Besides scanning, it also makes color & B&W copies (comes out of the printer), & PDFs. It can also scan negatives of photos, but I haven’t tried that yet. Quality is very good. My previous Canon Scanner was also good, but it was not compatible with Windows 7 and there were no drivers for it. Canon makes great scanners!
Works great!

I bought this to scan family photos and documents. It works quickly and the photos and documents come out clearly. I am happy with this purchase.
