Could be improved but works well

This scanner is easy to connect to any computer, but, for what I bought it for, the software isn’t exactly intuitive. It didn’t take too long to figure it out, but it did take longer to find several of the functions/features than I thought it should have. However, its made well, and once I found all the functions I needed it worked well!
love it!

Best product for the cost.
I’m so glad I took the plunge and went with this low priced large format scanner when I decided to purchase a new scanner for my desktop Mac10.4.
I’m an artist and I have a 8 1/2 x 11 for my old imac and while that HP scanner is good for my small pictures, I needed to get my larger work into my new mac quicker than always pulling out my digital camera and lights set up to take a decent photo. This scanner has a nice speed, low sound and works very well for my pencil, pen & ink, prismacolor drawings and my acrylic paintings, not to mention, mixed media collage work. I’ve also scanned larger paintings in portions and knit them together in Photoshop.
If you are considering getting a large format scanner and can’t afford the thousands of a “professional” scanner, this is your best bet. I’ve noticed no flaws in anything I’ve scanned; next up I’m going to try and scan some of the jewelry i make and see how it performs with 3D stuff!
The economic choice for Mac OS X large format scans…

This is a fair scanner. The install is a pain – if you have an HP printer/scanner combo those drivers will override the Mustek. You must only install the printer driver for HP. The scanner interface is painfully outdated and Mustek is a TWAIN resource in Mac OS X, which 10.6 (Snow Leopard) discontinued support of. As a result, if you want to use this scanner in 10.6 you must go to the link below:
[...]
and download the legacy TWAIN driver. Place the driver into your Photoshop Import/Export folder (Photoshop > Plug-Ins > Import/Export) and it will show up in Photoshop, allowing you to scan your imagery at last.
It’s not the greatest scanner in the world; it’s been an enormous hassle to install. However, you can’t beat the price for a large format scanner.
Good affordable large format scanner at a great price

For a long time I had been looking a large bed scanner that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. If you only need up to 1200 dpi then this is your scanner. I usually only need up to 600 dpi. The image quality is very good. I scanned a large image at 600 dpi and made a 8X10 print and it looked fine. More than likely you will have to use the interface software provided since I discovered my other photo applications do not recognize this scanner. The ScanExpress A3 USB 1200 Pro ‘panel’ is really bad. I recommend you go into ‘ArcSoft MediaExpression’ then select the ‘Acquire’ icon at the bottom left of the page. That interface still is fairly basic, but at least you can crop and scan as needed. Yes there are no buttons or on/off switch on the scanner but that is what the interface is for. I’ve used this frequently for about a month with no problems. It doesn’t weigh much but it IS huge. I use it with my notebook on my kitchen table when I need it. I recommend you scan your images to an external drive with lots of space. A typical 600 dpi image will give you a 50-75 megabyte jpeg file. Happy large format scanning!
Don’t buy this if you have a mac

I don’t have the latest version of the Mac software as everything I use works great. The problem is this scanner doesn’t work with OSX 10.4. When I upgraded from 10.3 the problems started. Photoshop didn’t recognize the scanner, so I tried a long laborious workaround (that didn’t). Now I have to scan everything with my tried-and-true Epson 8 1/2 x 11 or use my PC to use the larger format. In addition the scan edges (even when it was working on my OSX 10.3) tended to have a “harder” look.
If you must have an 11×17 scanner then this is about the least expensive way to go, but be warned.
